Coalgate School Board welcomes new member, approves new hires
The Coalgate School Board welcomed a new member June 6 and approved several new hires.
Chad Lackey was sworn in for his board position, then, the board selected Justin Brown to continue as president, Mark Benedict to continue as vice-president, Tommie Stanberry to continue as clerk and Chad Lackey and Tracy Penney will continue as members.
After returning from executive session, the board rehired all of the support staff for next year.
The board also hired Janice Glover as a special education teacher; Niki Walker as boys’ varsity basketball coach and teacher for the middle school and high school; Michaela Grant as a first-grade teacher; Kaci Maynard as a kindergarten teacher; Meredith Welch as a fifth-grade teacher; Rhoda Montecastro as a teacher’s aide; and Jackie Gaylor, Kim Brown, Wanda Peck, Rebecca Rivers, and Chana Brown as elementary paraprofessionals.
Also hired was Tasha Haley as a bus driver and teacher’s aide, and Taylor Miller as middle school STEM teacher.
JW Stanley resigned as middle school math teacher and assistant baseball coach, and Erika Stanley resigned as high school history teacher and high school track coach. The board accepted their resignations.
The board also approved:
- A contract with OSIG for the 2022-2023 school year. OSIG provides insurance for Coalgate Schools and is the same company the system has used previously.
- A certificate and order to the county clerk and county treasurer re-appointing Loretta DePasse as treasurer for 2022-2023 school year.
- A revised fundraiser policy, which was updated to change the dates that fundraisers need to be submitted each year.
- The purchase of new desktop computers and Chromebooks. The majority of the upgrades will be paid through Cares Act Money and Emergency Connectivity Fund Money.
- The purchase of a new 71 passenger route school bus, which will also be paid for through Cares Act money.
- Fundraisers for Band and Choir.
a. Band: Summer Games (July 4th), Homecoming Chili/ Bean Supper, and Spring Corn hole tournament.
b. Choir: Summer Hat Sale, Cotton Candy/Snow Cones (football games), Spring Talent show.
Also on the agen da was a discussion to approve or not approve a food management bid contract for 2022-2023 school year. The matter was tabled until July.
Superintendent’s report
In the superintendent’s report, superintendent Jack Ward said Elementary Summer School is off to a good start.
“Congratulations to Mrs. Kayla Blue for being named an Alpha Plus Model Teacher,” Ward said.
Blue teaches third grade.
Ward also congratulated Emerson third grade teachers and students, as 94% of the third-grade students passed their reading goals.
