Bonna Dean Freeze

Bonna Deen (Mayes) Freeze, age 89 of Goldsby, passed away Sunday, October 2, 2022. She was born October 3, 1932 in Coal County, OK, the middle of three children born to Joe Lee Mayes and Stella Fay (Hart) Mayes. She started school in a two-room schoolhouse at Lone Oak. She graduated from Tupelo High School with the Class of 1950.

By chance, Bonna Deen met a young man named Gene Freeze. She was working as a waitress at a local café, and they hit it right off. Gene asked her to marry him, and three weeks later, on August 22, 1951, they slipped off to Gainesville, TX and were married.

They first made their home in Oklahoma City, where they welcomed son Kim and daughter Gail. Bonna Deen worked tirelessly as a homemaker, caring and providing for their every need. They bought a farm near Purcell in 1959, and began to build their homestead.

By 1964, they settled on the farm, and she worked with Gene in the day-to-day operations of the farm. She was a gifted baker and cook, and began baking cakes, and catered countless weddings and events for the next 30+ years.

Bonna Deen retired from the Lexington A&R after 17 years of work. She was an excellent seamstress, and designed men’s and women’s clothes. She loved the lake, and enjoyed it both from her family cabin on the water and water skiing behind the boat. She was an avid sports fan from playing basketball, taking her grandson to his first OSU game at only a few months old, cheering on the OKC Thunder, and being the loudest whistle at countless of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s ball games from little league to college.

She was strong in her faith and studied scripture intently, sharing her knowledge by teaching Sunday School for many years. She encouraged, supported, and prayed fiercely for her family through all seasons of life. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and a true friend. She will be dearly missed!

She was preceded in death by: her husband Gene Freeze; her parents, Joe and Stella Fay Mayes and a brother, Billy Joe Mayes Sr.

Bonna Deen leaves behind her children, son Kim Freeze of Goldsby and daughter Gail Webb of Goldsby; brother, Eldon Lee Mayes and wife Barbara of Harrah, OK; two grandchildren, Greg Snow of Goldsby and Casey Wilson and husband Blythe of Purcell; eight great-grandchildren Alecsandria Harris and husband Nathan, Oliver Wilson, Stella Wilson, Arlie Pearl Wilson, Zeke Wilson, Brighton Snow, Cal Snow and Delia Snow; two great-great-grandchildren and a host of other family and friends.

Funeral Services are scheduled for 2:00 P. M. Wednesday (today), October 5, 2022, at Washington First Baptist Church. Burial will follow at the Hillside Cemetery in Purcell. www.wilsonlittle.com.
