Funeral services for Shirley Ann (Clay) Hunt were held Friday, April 4, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Stringtown First Baptist Church with Bro. Joey Lansdale officiating. Burial was in County Line Cemetery in Pickens, Oklahoma with Brown’s Funeral Service of Atoka in charge of arrangements.

Congratulations to the 1985 Coalgate Wildcat Football team that will be inducted into the Coalgate High School Hall of Fame May 24th at 5:00 p.m. The ‘85 team deserves this honor as they finished the year with an 11-2 record and a trip to the Class A State Quarter Finals. Their record with the offensive and defensive accomplishments makes it one the best teams in Coalgate history. The Wildcat team was made up of 15 seniors, 6 juniors and 9 sophomores. The Wildcat coaches were Stan Addy, head coach, and Troy Byrd, Gary Hummingbird and Joe Clifton assistant coaches.

Sunday, March 30, 2025, was a fun and memorable day for 4-year-old Lincoln Burns and PaPa Joe (aka Joe Don Burns). It was the day Lincoln reeled in this four-pound Largemouth Bass from PaPa Joe’s pond in Coalgate with a Zebco 33.

I was the only one handy that day and besides, being a teenager with a new driver’s license, I looked forward to the trip. I asked my grandpa a lot of questions that day. We were pretty close buddies anyway and many items he mentioned that day I still remember. Born in 1872 he knew a lot about early Oklahoma history. In fact, he lived a lot of it. Driving through Gowan on US270 and down Gowan Mountain into the vast Gowen Prairie, I asked him if he remembered how this part of the state looked in his “day.”

Thomas Jefferson immortalized this sentiment when he penned the Declaration of Independence writing, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” Most of us would admit that the energy of our lives is spent in this pursuit of happiness, for ourselves and others. But there is a real question here. Where does happiness come from? How do we obtain it? Is happiness dependent on our external circumstances or is something deeper involved?
